Top Ten Reasons Why My Child Will Be Successful This Year
1. My child will complete their homework assignments each night. Expect your child to have homework every night. Ask about assignments and stay involved with the expectations of each class. Be careful not to make excuses for your child.
2. My child will keep an assignment notebook. This is a skill that will help them the rest of their life. The school has provided a notebook/planner for each student. Please expect your child to use it daily.
3. My child will become more responsible if I expect responsibility. High School is full of expectations, choices, and opportunities. A responsible student will be able to handle the time demands and the freedom that high school offers. Talk to your child about the expectations you have for them and stick to the rules you have as a family.
4. Encourage school involvement. There are opportunities for everyone. Extracurricular activities contribute to the self-esteem of all students.
5. Expect your child to be on time to school. Classes start at 7:45. If a student walks in at 7:46 they are late. A student that arrives as the bell rings is not as prepared as one that arrives 15 minutes prior to class.
6. Talk to your child about school. Ask about classes, assignments, and activities. Make this year about communication. Encourage your child to talk to his or her teacher when he has a question.
7. Ask teachers for help. This will be a successful year if you partner with your child’s teachers. Email is a great way to communicate. Your child will be successful if everyone works together.
8. Focus on family time and keep outside distractions to a minimum. Attend school events as a family.
9. Have the home computer is a central location instead of your child’s room. Encourage a technology free evening enabling a child to do their homework without distractions. Decrease or eliminate text messaging and other cell phone use in the evenings.
10. Pray.
